The data used in these visualizations come from a variety of sources (ProMED Mail, CIA Fact Book, UNDP, Wikipedia, Yahoo Maps API, and Google Maps). CIA Factbook and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) provide demographic and other related information about countries. Wikipedia provides subject matter information about emerging infectious diseases whenever available. YahooMaps and GoogleMaps provide geographic information. The Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) is a two-decade old project of the the U.S. National Library of Medicine and is a comprehensive concept knowledge base about health made available as a web service.
